The crash took place in Hartford County around 5 a.m., on I-84 in West Hartford near Exit 44.

According to the Connecticut State Police, Gary Michael Carter, of Enfield, was killed when his 2017 Volvo TT hit the back of a Connecticut transit bus stopped in traffic in the right center lane of four on I-84.

State police said "for an unknown reason" Carter did not stop in time before colliding with the bus, which did not have any passengers.

After hitting the bus, the Volvo then collided with the side of a tractor-trailer in the right center lane and then hit the side of a Honda Civic, state police said.

The Honda Civic then hit a USPS truck as the transit bus was pushed into the side of a Jeep Wrangler Sport which then hit the rear end of a tractor-trailer, state police added.

State police said several people suffered minor injuries; three were transported to Hartford Hospital. Carter was pronounced dead at the scene.

All vehicles were towed from the scene.

The case remains under investigation. Any witness to the collision is asked to contact Trooper Michael Dean at 860-534-1098 or through email at michael.dean@ct.gov

State Police are also asking anyone with a dash cam and who was in the area at the time of the collision, you are also asked to contact Trooper Dean.
